Ease of Cultivation and Culinary Use: Culinary Blend basil is a delightful mixture of various basil types, providing a robust and aromatic flavor profile ideal for a range of culinary applications. This blend is relatively easy to grow, making it a favorite among both novice and seasoned gardeners. The versatility of the blend allows it to be used fresh in salads, pestos, and sauces, or dried for use in seasonings, enhancing the flavors of Mediterranean and Italian dishes.
Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant Culinary Blend basil seeds outdoors after the last frost in rich, well-drained soil. Sow the seeds ¼ inch deep, spacing them about 12 inches apart in rows that are 18 inches apart. Germination typically occurs within 5–14 days. Basil prefers warm temperatures and full sun, so ensure the plants receive at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day. Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid overwatering, as basil is sensitive to root rot.
Early Sowing for Seedlings: To start early, sow basil seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost. Use seedling trays filled with a quality potting mix, lightly pressing the seeds into the soil. Maintain a temperature of around 70°F for optimal germination. Once seedlings have developed two sets of true leaves and the danger of frost has passed, transplant them outdoors, spacing them about 12 inches apart to allow for healthy growth.
Harvesting: To determine when Culinary Blend basil is ready for harvest, look for plants that are 6–12 inches tall, typically ready within 60-90 days. Begin harvesting by snipping off leaves from the top of the plant to encourage bushier growth. Regular harvesting of leaves not only enhances flavor but also prolongs the life of the plant. For the best taste, harvest before flowering, as the leaves can become bitter once the plant goes to seed.
