Chamomile – German

  • Growing Temp 60°F – 70°F
  • Days to Maturity 60-90 days

Ease of Cultivation and Uses: German chamomile is an annual herb known for its delicate white flowers and sweet, apple-like fragrance. It is relatively easy to grow, thriving in well-drained soil and full sun. Chamomile is widely used in herbal teas, renowned for its calming effects, making it a favorite for promoting relaxation and sleep.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant German chamomile seeds outdoors in early spring after the last expected frost when soil temperatures reach around 60°F. Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil, as they require light for germination, and lightly press them down. Space the seeds about 12 inches apart in rows that are 18–24 inches apart. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days. Keep the soil consistently moist during this period, but avoid overwatering to prevent damping off.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To start early, sow German chamomile seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost. Use seedling trays filled with quality potting mix, scattering the seeds on the surface and pressing them down lightly. Maintain a temperature of 70°F to encourage germination. Once the seedlings have developed their first true leaves and the danger of frost has passed, transplant them into the garden. Space the transplants about 12 inches apart in rows that are 18–24 inches apart. Water them well after planting and consider adding mulch to help retain moisture.

Harvesting: To determine when German chamomile is ready for harvest, look for fully opened flowers, which typically occur within 60-90 days after sowing. The best time to harvest is on a sunny morning when the flowers are dry. Cut the flowers just above the leaves to encourage new growth. Dry the harvested flowers in a cool, dark place and store them in an airtight container to preserve their flavor and potency for use in teas and other herbal remedies.
