Ease of Cultivation and uses: The ‘All Sorts Mixture’ Sunflower is a delightful collection of vibrant sunflowers that brings joy and color to any garden. These flowers are generally easy to grow, making them ideal for novice gardeners and experienced growers alike. Sunflowers thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, and their striking blooms attract bees and other pollinators, contributing to a healthy garden ecosystem. They are not only beautiful but can also be used for decorative arrangements and their seeds can be harvested for snacks or planting.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant ‘All Sorts Mixture’ sunflower seeds outdoors in the spring after the last frost date when soil temperatures reach around 70°F. Sow the seeds about 1 inch deep and 6 inches apart in rows spaced 2–3 feet apart to allow for their growth and size. Water the area thoroughly after sowing, and keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which typically occurs within 7–10 days. As the plants grow, they may require some staking for support, especially in windy conditions.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: For an early start, sow sunflower seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last expected frost date. Use biodegradable pots filled with seed-starting mix and plant one seed per pot, covering it lightly with soil. Maintain a temperature of 70°F to encourage germination. Once seedlings develop a couple of true leaves and the danger of frost has passed, transplant them into the garden, spacing them 12–24 inches apart depending on the variety. Water the transplants well to help them settle into their new environment.

Harvesting: To determine when to harvest ‘All Sorts Mixture’ sunflowers, look for the flower heads to begin to droop and the backs to turn yellow. This usually occurs when the seeds are mature. Cut the flower heads with a few inches of stem in the morning when they are dry. If you plan to harvest seeds, allow the heads to dry completely before removing the seeds, or cover them with a paper bag to prevent birds from eating them before you’re ready to collect.
