Mane Gloria – Heavenly Blue

Ease of Cultivation and uses: Morning Glory ‘Heavenly Blue’ is a stunning climbing vine known for its large, vibrant blue flowers that bloom in the morning, hence the name. This variety is relatively easy to grow, making it an excellent choice for both novice and experienced gardeners. It thrives in full sun and can quickly cover trellises, fences, and arbors, creating a beautiful display. The flowers are not only visually appealing but can also be used in floral arrangements or enjoyed as a lovely backdrop in gardens.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant ‘Heavenly Blue’ seeds outdoors after the last frost date, when soil temperatures have reached at least 65°F. Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours before planting to enhance germination. Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep and space them 6–12 inches apart in well-drained soil. Germination usually occurs within 7–14 days. Provide support for the vines to climb, such as trellises or fences, and keep the soil consistently moist until the plants are established.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To get a head start on the growing season, sow ‘Heavenly Blue’ seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last expected frost. Use seed trays filled with a light potting mix and plant the seeds 1/4 inch deep. Maintain a warm temperature of around 70°F for optimal germination. Once the seedlings have developed their first true leaves and the risk of frost has passed, transplant them into the garden, spacing them 6–12 inches apart. Water thoroughly after transplanting to encourage strong root growth.

Harvesting: While Morning Glory flowers are primarily grown for their ornamental value, you can enjoy the blooms as they open in the morning. The flowers typically last only a day, so the best time to appreciate them is early in the day. Regularly deadheading spent blooms will encourage more flowers to form. If you wish to collect seeds, allow some of the flowers to mature and dry on the vine, then harvest the seeds when they turn brown and brittle. Store the seeds in a cool, dry place for future planting.
