Marigold – French – Janie

  • Growing Temp 65°F – 75°F
  • Days to Maturity 50-60 days

Ease of Cultivation and uses: Marigold ‘French – Janie’ is a dwarf variety known for its compact growth and abundant blooms in bright shades of yellow, orange, and gold. It is easy to grow and ideal for garden borders, containers, and small spaces. The plants are heat-tolerant and thrive in sunny conditions. ‘Janie’ marigolds also make great companion plants, repelling pests naturally. The edible flowers can be used to garnish salads and desserts, adding color and a mild citrus flavor.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant ‘Janie’ seeds outdoors after the last frost, when soil temperatures have warmed to 65°F. Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep, spacing them 6–8 inches apart in well-drained soil. The seeds will germinate in 5–7 days. Keep the soil evenly moist during the germination period but avoid waterlogging. Once the plants are established, they require minimal care and can withstand dry conditions, making them a low-maintenance addition to any garden.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To get a head start, sow ‘Janie’ seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Place seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed trays filled with a light potting mix. Maintain a temperature of around 70°F to ensure good germination. Once seedlings have grown their first true leaves and outdoor temperatures have warmed, transplant them into the garden, spacing them 6–8 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting to help them establish strong roots.

Harvesting: Harvest ‘Janie’ marigolds when the blooms are fully open and brightly colored. The best time to cut the flowers is early in the morning when they are fresh and hydrated. Use clean scissors to snip the blooms at the base of the stem. Regular deadheading will promote more flowering throughout the growing season, keeping your garden colorful. The flowers can be used fresh or dried for decorative and culinary purposes.
