Marigold – African – Inventio

Ease of Cultivation and uses: Marigold ‘African – Discovery’ is a compact and robust variety known for its early blooming and large, vibrant flowers. It is exceptionally easy to grow, making it a great option for beginner gardeners. These marigolds are perfect for containers, flower beds, and garden borders, thriving in warm conditions with minimal care. The flowers are edible and can add a burst of color to salads or be used as garnishes.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant ‘African – Discovery’ seeds outdoors after the danger of frost has passed, and when soil temperatures are between 65°F and 80°F. Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep, spacing them 8–12 inches apart in well-drained soil. Marigolds prefer full sun and will germinate in 5–10 days. Once established, they are relatively drought-tolerant but benefit from regular watering to maintain strong, continuous blooming.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To start seedlings indoors, sow seeds 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Use seed-starting trays filled with a light potting mix, planting seeds 1/4 inch deep. Keep the trays in a warm spot with temperatures around 70°F for optimal germination. Once the seedlings have developed true leaves and the risk of frost has passed, transplant them outdoors, spacing them 8–12 inches apart. Water the transplants well to help them settle into their new environment.

Harvesting: ‘African – Discovery’ marigolds can be harvested when the blooms are fully open and brightly colored. The best time to cut flowers is in the morning when the plants are hydrated. Use clean scissors to snip the blooms, which can be used for both decorative and edible purposes. Deadheading spent flowers will encourage more blooms throughout the season, ensuring the plants continue to flower profusely.
