Marigold – African – Cracker Jack

Ease of Cultivation and uses: Marigold ‘African – Cracker Jack’ is a tall, striking variety known for its large, ruffled blooms in vibrant shades of orange, yellow, and gold. This marigold is easy to grow and perfect for garden borders, cutting gardens, and large containers. It’s an excellent choice for gardeners looking to attract pollinators while also deterring pests. The blooms are edible and can be used as colorful garnishes or in salads, making ‘Cracker Jack’ both beautiful and functional.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant ‘African – Cracker Jack’ seeds outdoors after the last frost when soil temperatures range between 65°F and 80°F. Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep, spaced 12–18 inches apart in well-drained soil. These marigolds prefer full sun and require consistent moisture during their early growth stages. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days. Once established, ‘Cracker Jack’ marigolds are drought-tolerant but will benefit from regular watering during hot, dry periods.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To start seedlings early, sow the seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Use a quality seed-starting mix, planting the seeds 1/4 inch deep in trays. Keep the soil warm, ideally at 70°F, to encourage quick germination. When the seedlings have their first true leaves and the weather has warmed, transplant them outdoors, spacing them 12–18 inches apart in a sunny location. Water thoroughly after planting to help them establish.

Harvesting: ‘Cracker Jack’ marigolds can be harvested when the flowers are fully open and brightly colored. The best time to cut blooms is in the morning when they are most fresh. Using clean scissors, snip the flowers at their base. Regular deadheading will encourage more blooms and prolong the flowering season. The flowers can also be dried or used fresh as edible garnishes, adding a splash of color to any dish.
