Marigold – Nematode Imperium

  • Growing Temp 65°F – 80°F
  • Days to Maturity 55-70 days

Ease of Cultivation and uses: Marigold ‘Nematode Control’ is a highly functional and easy-to-grow variety known for its ability to suppress harmful soil nematodes. These marigolds are prized not only for their bright flowers but also for their natural pest-repellent properties, making them an excellent companion plant in vegetable gardens. They are easy to grow in most soil types and thrive in warm conditions. The flowers are also edible, adding a pop of color and a mild, citrusy flavor to salads and other dishes.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant ‘Nematode Control’ seeds outdoors after the last frost when soil temperatures are between 65°F and 80°F. Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep, spacing them 6–12 inches apart in well-drained soil. Marigolds prefer full sun and will germinate in 5–10 days with consistent moisture. Once established, they require minimal care, as they tolerate drought well and thrive in poor soil, although they benefit from occasional watering during dry spells.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To start early, sow seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Use seed-starting trays with a light potting mix and plant the seeds 1/4 inch deep. Maintain a temperature of around 70°F for optimal germination. Once seedlings have their first true leaves and the risk of frost has passed, transplant them outdoors, spacing them 6–12 inches apart. Water the transplants thoroughly to help them establish in their new environment.

Harvesting: Marigold ‘Nematode Control’ plants can be harvested when their bright, vibrant flowers are fully open. The best time to cut flowers is in the morning after the dew has evaporated. Use sharp scissors to snip the blooms, which can be used for both ornamental and culinary purposes. Deadheading spent blooms encourages new growth and helps prolong the flowering season, ensuring a continuous display and ongoing pest control benefits throughout the growing period.
