Marigold – Signata – Gem

  • Growing Temp 65°F – 75°F
  • Days to Maturity 60-70 days

Ease of Cultivation and uses: Marigold ‘Signata – Gem’ is a compact and vibrant variety known for its delicate, citrus-scented flowers. These marigolds are very easy to grow, making them perfect for gardeners of all skill levels. Thriving in a range of conditions, they are great for borders, containers, and companion planting, as they deter pests while adding a burst of cheerful color. The edible flowers can also be used in salads or as garnishes, providing a visual and flavorful element to dishes.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant ‘Signata – Gem’ seeds outdoors after the last frost when soil temperatures are consistently between 65°F and 75°F. Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep, spacing them 6–12 inches apart in well-drained soil. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days. Marigolds are quite tolerant of poor soil, but they perform best in sunny locations with moderate moisture. Watering should be consistent, but be careful not to overwater, as these plants prefer drier conditions once established.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: For an early start, sow seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Use seed trays filled with a quality seed-starting mix, placing the seeds 1/4 inch deep. Keep the trays in a warm area, maintaining a temperature of 70°F for optimal germination. Once seedlings have developed true leaves and the danger of frost has passed, transplant them outdoors, spacing them 6–12 inches apart in well-drained soil. Water well after transplanting to help them establish.

Harvesting: To harvest ‘Signata – Gem’ marigolds, look for flowers that are fully open and brightly colored. The best time to pick flowers is in the morning after the dew has dried. For culinary use, snip the flowers carefully with clean scissors, selecting the freshest blooms. Marigold petals can be used fresh in salads or dried for teas and garnishes. Deadheading spent flowers will encourage more blooms and extend the flowering season, ensuring a continuous display throughout the summer.
