Tomato – ‘Big Beef Hybrid’

  • Growing Temp 70°F – 85°F
  • Days to Maturity 70-75 days

Ease of Cultivation and exceptional flavor: The Big Beef Hybrid tomato is known for its large, meaty fruits and excellent disease resistance. This indeterminate variety produces high yields of flavorful, juicy tomatoes, making it a favorite among home gardeners. Though slightly more challenging to grow due to its size and growth habit, Big Beef Hybrid is well worth the effort. It can be eaten fresh, sliced for sandwiches, used in sauces, or canned for later use, making it a versatile tomato in the kitchen.

Direct Sowing: Big Beef Hybrid tomatoes are best started indoors and then transplanted outside once temperatures are consistently warm. However, if direct sowing, wait until after the last frost when soil temperatures are above 70°F. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep and 2-3 feet apart, providing plenty of space for growth. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination occurs, which typically takes 7-14 days. Once the seedlings are established, apply mulch to retain moisture and reduce weeds.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: Start Big Beef Hybrid seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Sow the seeds in seedling trays filled with a quality potting mix, placing one seed per cell. Maintain a temperature of 70-80°F for optimal germination. When the seedlings develop their second set of true leaves, transplant them into larger containers. After the last frost and once outdoor temperatures are stable, harden off the seedlings and transplant them into the garden, spacing 24-36 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch to conserve moisture.

Harvesting: Big Beef Hybrid tomatoes are ready to harvest when the fruits are fully red, firm, and slightly soft to the touch. They typically grow to about 10-12 ounces each. Harvest regularly to encourage continued production. For best flavor, pick the tomatoes just before they reach full ripeness and allow them to ripen fully off the vine. Avoid leaving the fruits on the vine too long, as they may crack or lose flavor.
