Pepper – ‘Hot – Jalapeno Early’

  • Growing Temp 70°F – 85°F
  • Days to Maturity 60-70 days

Ease of Cultivation and early harvest: Jalapeno Early peppers are a fast-maturing variety known for their moderate heat and robust flavor. They are relatively easy to grow, making them suitable for gardeners of all experience levels. This variety thrives in warm weather and can be enjoyed in various culinary applications, from fresh salsas to grilling, allowing gardeners to enjoy peppers sooner in the season.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant seeds outdoors after the last frost date when the soil temperature is at least 70°F. Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep and space them 18-24 inches apart in rows that are 30-36 inches apart. Germination typically occurs within 14-21 days. Keep the soil consistently moist, using mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. As the peppers grow, staking may be beneficial for support.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To start early, sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost. Use seedling trays filled with quality potting mix, placing 2-3 seeds per cell. Maintain a temperature of 70-80°F for optimal germination. Once the seedlings have their first true leaves and the risk of frost has passed, transplant them into the garden, spacing them 18-24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after transplanting and apply mulch around the base to help retain moisture.

Harvesting: To determine when Jalapeno Early peppers are ready for harvest, look for firm, plump peppers that are usually 3-4 inches long. They can be harvested while still green or allowed to ripen to a bright red color for a sweeter flavor. Harvesting generally occurs around 60-70 days after planting. Use scissors or garden shears to cut the peppers from the plant, taking care not to damage the branches.
