Onion – ‘Long – Ruby’

  • Growing Temp 50°F – 75°F
  • Days to Maturity 100-120 days

Ease of Cultivation and vibrant color: Ruby long onions are celebrated for their striking deep red color and mild, sweet flavor. This long onion variety is relatively easy to cultivate, making it a great choice for gardeners of all skill levels. They thrive in well-drained soil and can be used in a variety of dishes, from salads to sautéed dishes, adding both color and taste to meals.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant seeds outdoors in early spring once the soil temperature has reached at least 50°F. Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep and 1 inch apart in rows that are spaced 12-18 inches apart. Germination typically occurs within 7-14 days. Once seedlings emerge, thin them to 4-6 inches apart to allow for ample space for bulb development. Ensure the soil remains consistently moist and monitor for any weeds that may compete for nutrients and water.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To get a head start on the growing season, sow seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost date. Use seedling trays with quality potting mix, placing one or two seeds per cell. Maintain a temperature of 65-75°F for optimal germination. After the seedlings develop several true leaves and the danger of frost has passed, transplant them into the garden, spacing them 4-6 inches apart in rows 12-18 inches apart. Water thoroughly after transplanting and apply mulch to conserve moisture and prevent weeds.

Harvesting: To determine when Ruby long onions are ready for harvest, observe the tops, which will begin to yellow and fall over when the onions are mature. Typically, they are ready to harvest around 100-120 days after planting when the bulbs are fully developed and firm. Carefully lift the onions from the soil using a garden fork or by hand, and allow them to cure in a dry, well-ventilated area for a couple of weeks before storing. For the best flavor and quality, harvest before extreme heat sets in.
