Melon – ‘Honeydew – Green Flesh’

Ease of Cultivation and sweet, refreshing flavor: The Green Flesh Honeydew melon is a delightful variety known for its smooth, pale yellow skin and sweet, juicy green flesh. It is relatively easy to grow, making it suitable for home gardeners. With a preference for warm weather and plenty of sunlight, honeydew melons can be enjoyed fresh, in fruit salads, or blended into refreshing smoothies, offering a wonderful addition to summer dishes.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant the seeds outdoors after the last frost date and when the soil temperature reaches at least 65°F. Sow the seeds 1 inch deep and 2-3 feet apart in rows spaced 3-5 feet apart. The seeds typically germinate within 7-14 days. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, and ensure the plants have enough space to spread out. Honeydew melons will be ready for harvest approximately 80-90 days after sowing.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: For an early start, sow seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last expected frost. Use seedling trays filled with quality potting mix, placing one seed per cell. Maintain a temperature of 75-80°F to encourage germination. Once the seedlings have their first true leaves and the danger of frost has passed, transplant them into the garden, spacing the plants 2-3 feet apart in rows. Water them well after transplanting and apply mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Harvesting: To identify when Green Flesh Honeydew melons are ready to harvest, look for a creamy yellow color at the blossom end and a waxy sheen on the skin. The melon should feel slightly soft when pressed, and a sweet aroma should be noticeable. Additionally, check for the ease of detachment from the vine; if it separates with little effort, it’s ready to pick. For the best flavor and texture, harvest in the morning when temperatures are cooler.
