Melon – ‘Cantaloupe – Imperial 45’

  • Growing Temp 70°F – 90°F
  • Days to Maturity 75-85 days

Ease of Cultivation and sweet, juicy fruit: The Imperial 45 cantaloupe is a highly sought-after variety known for its sweet, juicy flesh and smooth, netted skin. It is relatively easy to grow, making it a great choice for both novice and experienced gardeners. With a preference for warm temperatures and well-drained soil, this melon can be enjoyed fresh, in fruit salads, or blended into smoothies, adding a refreshing sweetness to various dishes.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant the seeds outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and when the soil temperature reaches at least 70°F. Sow the seeds 1 inch deep and 2-3 feet apart in rows that are 3-5 feet apart. The seeds will germinate within 7-14 days under optimal conditions. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and provide adequate space for the vines to spread. You can begin harvesting the melons approximately 75-85 days after sowing, when they are fully matured.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To start early, sow seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last expected frost date. Use seedling trays filled with a high-quality potting mix, placing one seed per cell. Maintain a temperature of 75-80°F for optimal germination. Once the seedlings have developed their first true leaves and the risk of frost has passed, transplant them into the garden, spacing the plants 2-3 feet apart in rows. Water thoroughly after transplanting and mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Harvesting: To determine when Imperial 45 cantaloupes are ready to harvest, look for a slight change in color from green to golden-yellow at the blossom end. The netting on the skin should be pronounced, and the melon should feel slightly soft when gently pressed. A sweet aroma and ease of detachment from the vine are also indicators of ripeness. Harvest in the morning for the best flavor and texture, as melons tend to lose their sweetness if left on the vine too long.
