Okra – ‘Clemson Spineless 80’

  • Growing Temp 70°F – 95°F
  • Days to Maturity 50-60 days

Ease of Cultivation and tender pods: Clemson Spineless okra is a popular variety known for its smooth, spineless pods and prolific production. It is relatively easy to grow, making it suitable for both novice and experienced gardeners. This warm-season crop thrives in hot weather and is often used in southern cooking, adding a unique flavor to dishes like gumbo and stir-fries.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant the seeds outdoors once the soil temperature has reached at least 70°F, usually after the last frost date. Sow the seeds 1 inch deep and 12-18 inches apart in rows that are spaced 3-4 feet apart. Germination typically occurs within 7-14 days. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells, and provide adequate spacing to allow for air circulation as the plants grow. Harvesting can begin once the pods reach 3-4 inches in length.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To get a head start, sow seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last expected frost. Use seedling trays with a quality potting mix, placing one seed per cell. Maintain a temperature of 75-85°F for optimal germination. Once the seedlings have developed their first true leaves and the danger of frost has passed, transplant them into the garden, spacing them 12-18 inches apart. Water well after transplanting and apply mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Harvesting: To identify when Clemson Spineless okra is ready to harvest, look for pods that are 3-4 inches long and firm to the touch. Harvest regularly, ideally every 2-3 days, to encourage continued production. If the pods are left too long on the plant, they can become tough and fibrous. For the best flavor and texture, pick the pods while they are still young and tender.
