Gourds – ‘Luffa Sponge’

  • Growing Temp 75°F – 95°F
  • Days to Maturity 120-150 days

Ease of Cultivation and Practical Uses: Luffa gourds are well-known for their versatility, primarily grown to create natural sponges. While they require a long growing season and warm temperatures, they are relatively easy to grow once established. Luffas can be eaten when young and tender, but they are typically left to mature for harvesting as sponges.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant luffa seeds outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures have reached at least 75°F. Sow seeds 1 inch deep and 2-3 feet apart in rows spaced 6 feet apart, as these vigorous vines require ample space to spread. Luffas prefer well-drained, fertile soil and full sun exposure. Germination usually occurs within 10-14 days. Train the vines to climb on a trellis or fence to promote better air circulation and to keep the fruits off the ground. Luffa gourds need a long growing season, so expect to harvest in about 120-150 days.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To ensure a full growing season, start luffa seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Sow seeds 1 inch deep in individual pots filled with a well-draining seed-starting mix. Keep the temperature between 70°F-85°F to encourage germination. Once the seedlings have a few true leaves and the weather has warmed, transplant them outdoors, spacing them 2-3 feet apart. Provide sturdy support like a trellis for the vines to climb as they grow.

Harvesting: Luffa gourds are ready to harvest when the skin turns yellow-brown and the gourds feel lightweight. To harvest for sponges, cut the gourd from the vine and allow it to fully dry. Once dry, peel the skin, shake out the seeds, and clean the fibrous interior. If harvesting young for eating, pick the gourds when they are about 6-8 inches long, as they will be tender and edible at this stage. Dry gourds can be processed into natural sponges for household or skincare use.
