Tomato – ‘Slicing – Brandywine Pink’

  • Growing Temp 65°F – 85°F
  • Days to Maturity 80-100 days

Ease of Cultivation and Culinary Use: Brandywine Pink is a popular heirloom variety known for its large, flavorful fruits and rich, old-fashioned tomato taste. It can be challenging to grow because it requires optimal conditions and longer growing seasons. The fruits can weigh up to 1 pound or more and have a distinct pinkish hue. This tomato is best eaten fresh, in sandwiches, or salads, where its deep flavor can be fully appreciated.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant Brandywine Pink seeds outdoors after the last frost when the soil temperature reaches 65°F or higher. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep and space them 24-36 inches apart in rows. Keep the soil moist and ensure it has good drainage to prevent waterlogging. Since this variety is indeterminate, the plants will grow continuously throughout the season and require staking or cages for support. Mulch around the plants to retain moisture and control weeds.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To get a head start, sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Plant seeds in trays with a good potting mix, keeping the temperature between 70-80°F for optimal germination. Once seedlings have a few true leaves, harden them off and transplant them outdoors when the danger of frost has passed. Space the transplants 24-36 inches apart in full sun. Staking or using a cage is recommended for the tall, indeterminate vines.

Harvesting: Brandywine Pink tomatoes are ready to harvest when they have a rich pink color and feel slightly firm to the touch. The fruits tend to crack if overripe, so pick them as soon as they ripen fully. Regular harvesting will encourage continuous fruit production. Given their large size and delicate skin, handle with care when picking.
