Tomato – ‘Slicing – Black Krim’

  • Growing Temp 70°F – 85°F
  • Days to Maturity 70-80 days

Ease of Cultivation and Culinary Use: Black Krim is a cherished heirloom tomato known for its deep, rich flavor and striking color. It can be slightly challenging to grow due to its susceptibility to cracking in variable weather, but the reward is well worth it. The fruits are medium to large, with a purplish-brown hue, and are excellent for slicing. Their savory, smoky flavor makes them ideal for salads, sandwiches, or fresh eating.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, wait until the soil temperature has reached at least 70°F and the last frost has passed. Plant seeds ¼ inch deep in rows spaced 24-36 inches apart. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Black Krim tomatoes are indeterminate, meaning they will continue to grow and produce fruit throughout the season. Support the vines with stakes or cages to keep the plants upright and encourage good airflow.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To start early, sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Use seed trays with a good-quality potting mix, maintaining a temperature of 70-80°F for germination. Once the seedlings have developed their first true leaves, harden them off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions. Transplant the seedlings into the garden, spacing them 24-36 inches apart, and provide full sun and well-drained soil. Stake or cage the plants as they grow.

Harvesting: Black Krim tomatoes are ready to harvest when the fruits have turned a deep purplish-red, with some green shoulders remaining. The tomatoes should feel firm yet give slightly to the touch. Regular harvesting encourages continued production. The fruits are prone to cracking if left on the vine too long, so pick them once they have fully ripened for the best flavor and texture.
