Tomato – ‘Paste – San Marzano Determinate’

  • Growing Temp 70°F – 85°F
  • Days to Maturity 75-80 days

Ease of Cultivation and Culinary Use: San Marzano tomatoes are renowned for their rich flavor and are considered one of the best varieties for making sauces, pastes, and canning. This determinate variety is easy to grow, especially in small gardens or containers due to its bush-like habit. San Marzano tomatoes are not only delicious but also productive, yielding flavorful fruit with minimal care in well-drained soil.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant San Marzano seeds outdoors once the soil has warmed to at least 70°F, and the danger of frost has passed. Sow the seeds ¼ inch deep in rows spaced 24-36 inches apart in full sun. The seeds will germinate in about 7-14 days if kept moist. As these are determinate tomatoes, the plants tend to be compact and will not require as much support, but light staking or caging can be helpful.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: Start San Marzano seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost. Use seedling trays filled with quality potting soil and maintain a temperature of 70-80°F for optimal germination. Once the seedlings have developed a few sets of true leaves, harden them off and transplant them into the garden. Space the transplants 24-36 inches apart, ensuring they are in a sunny location with rich, well-drained soil. Water thoroughly after planting, and mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Harvesting: San Marzano tomatoes are ready to harvest when they turn a deep, bright red and are firm to the touch. This variety typically reaches maturity in 75-80 days. Harvest the fruit regularly to encourage continued production and prevent overripening. For the best flavor and texture, pick the tomatoes when they are fully ripe and firm.
