Tangy, tart, and versatile: The Grande Rio Verde tomatillo is a hardy variety known for its vibrant green color and bold, tangy flavor. This popular variety is ideal for making salsas, sauces, and other Mexican dishes. It’s easy to grow and thrives in warm climates, making it a perfect addition to any garden.
Direct Sowing: Sow seeds directly into well-drained, fertile soil once the soil temperature has reached at least 60°F and all danger of frost has passed. Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep, spacing them 18–24 inches apart in rows spaced 36 inches apart. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during germination, which takes 7–14 days. Thin the seedlings to give them enough space for healthy growth.
Early Sowing for Seedlings: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost date, using seed trays filled with a well-draining potting mix. Maintain a temperature of 70–80°F for optimal germination. Once the seedlings have grown large enough and the outdoor conditions are stable, harden them off and transplant them 18–24 inches apart in a sunny garden area.
Harvesting: Grande Rio Verde tomatillos are ready for harvesting when their husks begin to split and the fruit inside has reached a firm, green size. Gently remove the tomatillos from their husks, and harvest them when fully matured for the best flavor. These tomatillos are great for making fresh salsas or can be stored for later use.
