Stevia rebaudiana

  • Growing Temp 70°F – 85°F
  • Days to Maturity 80-100 days

Ease of Cultivation and Culinary Use: Stevia, often referred to as the sweet herb, is known for its natural sweetness without the calories. It is relatively easy to grow, thriving in warm conditions with plenty of sunlight. This herb is primarily used as a natural sweetener in beverages, desserts, and various dishes, making it an excellent alternative to sugar.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant Stevia seeds outdoors after the danger of frost has passed, ideally when the soil temperature is consistently above 70°F. Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil, lightly pressing them in but not covering them, as they require light to germinate. Space the seeds about 18-24 inches apart in rows that are 24-36 inches apart. Germination typically occurs within 14-21 days, so keep the soil consistently moist during this period.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To start early, sow Stevia seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost. Use seedling trays filled with a quality potting mix, gently pressing the seeds into the surface. Maintain a temperature of 70–75°F for optimal germination. Once seedlings have developed several true leaves and the risk of frost has passed, transplant them outdoors, spacing them adequately to allow for healthy growth.

Harvesting: To determine when Stevia is ready for harvest, look for healthy plants with abundant leaves, typically within 80-100 days after sowing. You can start harvesting the leaves once they are fully developed and the plant has reached about 12-18 inches in height. The best time to harvest is just before the flowers bloom, as the leaves contain the highest concentration of sweetness at this stage. Regular harvesting encourages new growth and ensures a steady supply of sweet leaves throughout the growing season.
