Prolific, versatile, and easy to grow: Fordhook Zucchini Summer squash is a classic variety known for its tender, light green flesh and mild flavor. It thrives in warm weather and is very productive, making it a favorite for home gardeners. This zucchini is perfect for grilling, sautéing, or adding to baked dishes like casseroles and muffins.
Direct Sowing: Sow seeds directly outdoors once the soil has warmed to at least 60°F and the last frost has passed. Plant seeds 1 inch deep and space them 2–3 inches apart in rows 3–4 feet apart. Keep the soil consistently moist during germination, which should take around 7–10 days. Thin the seedlings to 12–18 inches apart for optimal growth.
Early Sowing for Seedlings: Start seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before the last frost using biodegradable pots and a well-draining potting mix. Maintain temperatures of 70–75°F to encourage rapid germination. Once seedlings develop a few true leaves and outdoor conditions are suitable, harden them off and transplant them 12–18 inches apart in the garden.
Harvesting: Fordhook zucchini is best harvested when the fruit is 6–8 inches long, still tender, and before the skin becomes tough. Regular harvesting encourages continuous production. Use a sharp knife or pruners to carefully cut the zucchini from the plant to avoid damaging the stems.
