Delicious, tender, and prolific: Cocozelle Zucchini Summer squash is a unique heirloom variety known for its striped, dark green skin and creamy flesh. This summer squash is relatively easy to grow and thrives in warm temperatures. It is perfect for stir-fries, grilling, or adding to salads, providing a mild, nutty flavor and tender texture.
Direct Sowing: Sow seeds directly into well-draining soil outdoors once the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Plant seeds 1 inch deep, spacing them 2–3 inches apart in rows spaced 3–4 feet apart. Keep the soil consistently moist during germination, which takes 7–10 days. Thin the seedlings to 12–18 inches apart to give each plant room to grow.
Early Sowing for Seedlings: Start seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before the last frost in biodegradable pots, using a light potting mix. Maintain temperatures of 70–75°F to promote strong germination. Once the seedlings develop true leaves and the outdoor temperatures are favorable, harden them off before transplanting them 12–18 inches apart in the garden.
Harvesting: For the best flavor and texture, harvest Cocozelle zucchini when the fruits are still young and tender, typically 6–8 inches long. Frequent harvesting encourages continuous production. Use a sharp knife or pruners to cut the zucchini from the plant, ensuring minimal damage to the plant itself.
