Raphanus sativus – French Breakfast

  • Growing Temp 50°F – 70°F
  • Days to Maturity 25-30 days

Fast-growing, crisp, and mildly spicy: French Breakfast Radish is a classic heirloom variety known for its elongated shape, bright red skin, and white tip. It is one of the easiest vegetables to grow, thriving in cool weather with minimal care. The tender texture and mild peppery flavor make it perfect for salads, sandwiches, or enjoyed fresh with butter and salt.

Direct Sowing: Sow seeds directly into well-drained soil as soon as the ground is workable in early spring or late summer for a fall crop. Plant seeds 1/2 inch deep and 1 inch apart in rows spaced 6–8 inches apart. Keep the soil consistently moist for rapid germination, which occurs within 4–7 days. Thin seedlings to 2–3 inches apart to allow for proper root development.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: Radishes are best sown directly, but for an early start, sow seeds indoors 2–3 weeks before the last frost in biodegradable pots. Maintain temperatures of 55–65°F for quick germination. Transplant outdoors once seedlings are a few inches tall, spacing them 2–3 inches apart. Avoid disturbing roots during transplanting to ensure proper growth.

Harvesting: French Breakfast Radishes mature quickly and should be harvested when they reach about 2–3 inches in length and are firm to the touch. Leaving them in the ground too long can result in a woody texture. Gently pull them from the soil, trim the tops, and wash thoroughly before use. Frequent harvesting encourages continuous production.
