Eschscholzia californica – California Formula Mix

  • Growing Temp 50°F – 75°F
  • Days to Maturity 55-75 days

Bright, delicate, and easy to grow: California Formula Mix Poppies are a vibrant blend of orange, pink, red, and yellow flowers that add color to any garden. They thrive in cool weather and well-draining soil, making them a low-maintenance choice for gardeners. These poppies attract pollinators and are ideal for flower beds, borders, and wildflower gardens.

Direct Sowing: Sow seeds directly in the garden in early spring or fall in mild climates. Scatter seeds lightly on the soil surface and press them in, as they need light to germinate. Space them 6–8 inches apart in rows or broadcast them for a natural look. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which takes 10–14 days. Thin seedlings for better airflow and growth.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: For an early start, sow seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost in biodegradable pots to minimize root disturbance. Keep the temperature between 55–65°F for good germination. Once seedlings develop true leaves, harden them off before transplanting outdoors, spacing them 6–8 inches apart in full sun.

Harvesting: California poppies bloom continuously, and deadheading spent flowers encourages further blooming. For cut flowers, harvest blooms in the morning before they fully open. If collecting seeds, allow seed pods to dry on the plant, then harvest them before they split open. Scatter seeds for self-sowing and naturalized growth in future seasons.
