Pepper – ‘Hot – Jalapeno’

  • Growing Temp 70°F – 85°F
  • Days to Maturity 70-75 days

Ease of Cultivation and popular flavor: Jalapeno peppers are a widely-loved variety known for their medium heat and versatile culinary uses. They are relatively easy to grow, making them an excellent choice for both novice and experienced gardeners. Jalapenos thrive in warm conditions and can be used fresh in salsas, stuffed, or pickled, adding a delightful kick to various dishes.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant seeds outdoors after the last frost date when the soil temperature reaches at least 70°F. Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep and 18-24 inches apart in rows spaced 30-36 inches apart. Germination typically occurs within 14-21 days. Keep the soil consistently moist and use mulch to help retain moisture and control weeds. Staking may be necessary to support the plants as the peppers develop.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To start early, sow seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost. Use seedling trays filled with quality potting mix, placing 2-3 seeds per cell. Maintain a temperature of 70-80°F for optimal germination. Once the seedlings have developed their first true leaves and the danger of frost has passed, transplant them into the garden, spacing them 18-24 inches apart. Water well after transplanting and apply mulch around the plants to retain moisture.

Harvesting: To determine when Jalapeno peppers are ready for harvest, look for firm, plump peppers that are typically 3-4 inches long. They can be harvested green or allowed to ripen to a bright red color for a sweeter flavor. Harvesting usually occurs around 70-75 days after planting. Use scissors or garden shears to cut the peppers from the plant to prevent damage to the branches.
