Marigold – African – Inca II

Ease of Cultivation and uses: Marigold ‘African – Inca II’ is a vigorous, large-flowered marigold variety, known for its vibrant orange and yellow blooms that make a striking addition to any garden. It’s easy to grow and requires minimal maintenance, making it a great choice for gardeners of all levels. Ideal for garden borders, flower beds, and containers, the flowers are also edible, adding a splash of color to dishes and salads.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant ‘African – Inca II’ seeds outdoors after the last frost, when soil temperatures are consistently between 65°F and 80°F. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, spacing them 10–12 inches apart in well-drained soil. These marigolds prefer full sun and will germinate within 5–10 days. Keep the soil consistently moist during germination but avoid waterlogging. Once established, they are fairly drought-tolerant but perform best with regular watering during dry spells.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To start indoors, sow seeds 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Plant the seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed trays filled with a quality potting mix. Keep the trays in a warm location, maintaining a temperature of about 70°F for optimal germination. Once the seedlings have developed true leaves and the weather has warmed, transplant them outdoors, spacing them 10–12 inches apart. Water well after transplanting to help them establish in their new environment.

Harvesting: ‘African – Inca II’ marigolds are ready for harvest when the blooms are fully open and show vibrant colors. Cut flowers early in the morning when they are fresh, using clean scissors to snip them at the base. Deadheading regularly will encourage continuous blooming throughout the season, ensuring the plants remain vibrant and full of flowers for a longer period. The flowers can also be used fresh or dried for culinary purposes.
