Marigold – African – Antigua

  • Growing Temp 65°F – 80°F
  • Days to Maturity 70-80 days

Ease of Cultivation and uses: Marigold ‘African – Antigua’ is a robust, large-flowered variety known for its bold, colorful blooms and its ability to thrive in hot climates. These marigolds are easy to grow and are perfect for garden borders, beds, and containers. They require minimal care, making them an excellent choice for beginners. In addition to their ornamental value, the flowers are edible and can be used as garnishes in dishes or salads, adding a splash of color.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant ‘African – Antigua’ seeds outdoors after the last frost when soil temperatures are between 65°F and 80°F. Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep, spacing them 10–12 inches apart in well-drained soil. Germination usually occurs within 5–10 days. These marigolds prefer full sun and will perform best in consistently moist but not waterlogged soil. Once established, they are relatively drought-tolerant, but regular watering during dry spells will ensure a more prolonged blooming season.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To get a head start on the growing season, sow seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost. Use seed-starting trays filled with a quality potting mix and plant the seeds 1/4 inch deep. Keep the trays in a warm, sunny spot with temperatures around 70°F to ensure optimal germination. Once the seedlings have developed true leaves and the danger of frost has passed, transplant them outdoors, spacing them 10–12 inches apart. Water well after planting to help them establish.

Harvesting: ‘African – Antigua’ marigolds are ready for harvest when the large, showy flowers are fully open and vibrant. The best time to pick the blooms is in the morning when the flowers are freshest. Use clean scissors to snip the blooms at their base, which can be used for decoration or culinary purposes. Deadheading regularly will encourage more blooms throughout the season, keeping the plants full of vibrant color well into late summer.
