Unique, ornamental, and rewarding to grow: Birdhouse Gourds are a fascinating addition to any garden, producing large, hard-shelled fruits perfect for crafting birdhouses, decorations, and containers. While they require a long growing season, they are relatively easy to cultivate in warm conditions. Once dried, the gourds can be hollowed out and used for creative projects.
Direct Sowing: Plant seeds directly in the garden after the last frost when the soil temperature is at least 70°F. Sow seeds 1 inch deep in rich, well-draining soil, spacing them 24–36 inches apart in rows 5–6 feet apart. Birdhouse gourds are vigorous climbers and benefit from a sturdy trellis for support. Keep the soil evenly moist and provide full sun for optimal growth.
Early Sowing for Seedlings: Start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost for an earlier harvest. Use biodegradable pots to avoid root disturbance, planting seeds 1 inch deep in nutrient-rich potting mix. Maintain a temperature of 75–85°F for successful germination. Once seedlings develop several true leaves and the weather warms, transplant them carefully into the garden, spacing them 24–36 inches apart.
Harvesting: Birdhouse Gourds are ready for harvest when the skin hardens and turns from green to tan or light brown. Leave them on the vine as long as possible to ensure they fully mature. Once harvested, cure the gourds by placing them in a dry, well-ventilated area for several months until they become lightweight and rattling seeds can be heard inside.
