Garbanzo Bean’

  • Growing Temp 60°F – 85°F
  • Days to Maturity 85-100 days

Ease of Cultivation and Nutritional Value: The garbanzo bean, also known as chickpea, is a nutritious legume rich in protein and fiber. It can be somewhat challenging to grow in cooler climates but thrives in areas with warm, dry conditions. Garbanzo beans are used in a variety of dishes, such as hummus, stews, and salads, adding a nutty flavor and creamy texture.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant garbanzo bean seeds outdoors once the soil temperature reaches at least 60°F and all danger of frost has passed. Sow seeds 1-2 inches deep and 4-6 inches apart in rows spaced 18-24 inches apart. Germination typically occurs within 10-14 days. Garbanzo beans prefer well-drained, fertile soil with plenty of sunlight. Thin the seedlings to 6 inches apart once they are a few inches tall, and keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Expect to harvest in about 85-100 days.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To get an earlier start, sow garbanzo bean seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost. Plant the seeds 1-2 inches deep in individual pots filled with quality potting mix, maintaining a temperature of 65°F-70°F for optimal germination. Once seedlings have a few true leaves and the weather has warmed, transplant them outdoors, spacing them 4-6 inches apart in rows. Water thoroughly after transplanting to encourage strong root growth.

Harvesting: Garbanzo beans are ready to harvest when the pods have turned brown and the seeds inside are fully developed, typically 85-100 days after sowing. You can harvest the pods by hand, either picking them fresh for immediate use or allowing them to dry on the plant for later storage. For dry beans, wait until the pods are fully dry and brittle before collecting. Garbanzo beans can be stored dry for long-term use or enjoyed fresh in various dishes.
