Ease of Cultivation and Culinary Use: Mammoth Long Island dill is a robust variety known for its tall, sturdy growth and abundant, flavorful leaves. It is relatively easy to cultivate and thrives in full sun, making it an excellent choice for home gardeners. This dill variety is prized for its strong flavor, commonly used in pickling, salads, and sauces. Both the leaves and seeds can be harvested for culinary use, providing versatility in the kitchen.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant Mammoth Long Island dill seeds outdoors after the last frost in well-drained soil. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, spacing them 12 inches apart in rows 12–15 inches apart. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days. Ensure the soil remains consistently moist, but avoid overwatering, as dill prefers moderate moisture levels. Thin seedlings to allow ample space for growth.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To start early, sow dill seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost. Use seedling trays filled with a light potting mix, lightly pressing the seeds into the soil surface. Keep the temperature around 60°F to encourage germination. Once the seedlings have developed two sets of true leaves and the threat of frost has passed, transplant them outdoors, spacing them 12 inches apart for optimal growth.

Harvesting: To identify when Mammoth Long Island dill is ready for harvest, look for vibrant, green leaves that are 6–10 inches long, usually ready within 50-70 days. Harvest the fronds as needed, starting from the outer stems to encourage further growth. For seed harvesting, allow the flowers to bloom and produce seed heads; collect the seeds once they turn brown and dry for use in cooking or future planting.
