Fragrant, charming, and easy to grow: Cottage Pink Dianthus is a classic garden favorite, known for its delicate, fringed petals and delightful spicy-sweet fragrance. It is an easy-to-grow perennial that thrives in well-draining soil and full sun. These flowers make excellent borders, container plants, or cut flowers, adding beauty and fragrance to any garden.
Direct Sowing: Plant seeds outdoors after the last frost in well-draining soil. Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep, spacing them 6–12 inches apart. Keep the soil lightly moist until germination, which takes 10–21 days. Dianthus thrives in full sun and benefits from occasional deadheading to encourage continuous blooming. Avoid overly wet conditions to prevent root rot.
Early Sowing for Seedlings: For an early start, sow seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Use seed trays with a well-draining potting mix, planting seeds 1/8 inch deep. Maintain a temperature of 65–75°F for optimal germination. Once seedlings develop several true leaves, harden them off before transplanting into the garden. Space transplants 6–12 inches apart in a sunny location.
Harvesting: Dianthus flowers can be harvested when fully open. Cut stems early in the morning for the longest vase life. Regular deadheading encourages more blooms throughout the season. To collect seeds, allow some flowers to dry on the plant, then harvest the seed pods before they split open.
