Zea mays var. indurata – Hopi Blue

  • Growing Temp 60°F – 95°F
  • Days to Maturity 100-110 days

Ancient, resilient, and highly nutritious: Hopi Blue Flint Corn is a traditional Native American variety prized for its deep blue kernels and exceptional drought tolerance. It is moderately easy to grow, requiring warm temperatures and consistent moisture for optimal development. The dried kernels are used for grinding into flour, making cornmeal, or even popping for a unique snack.

Direct Sowing: Sow seeds directly in the garden after the last frost when soil temperatures are at least 60°F. Plant seeds 1–2 inches deep, spacing them 8–12 inches apart in rows 30–36 inches apart. Corn grows best when planted in blocks rather than single rows to improve pollination. Keep soil consistently moist during germination and early growth. Mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: For an early start, sow seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before the last frost in biodegradable pots to prevent transplant shock. Use a well-draining potting mix and maintain temperatures of 70–85°F for germination. Once seedlings are 4–6 inches tall and all risk of frost has passed, transplant them into the garden, spacing them 8–12 inches apart in blocks for better pollination. Water well after transplanting.

Harvesting: Corn is ready to harvest when the husks turn brown and the kernels are hard enough to resist denting with a fingernail. For grinding or storage, allow ears to fully dry on the stalk before harvesting. To check readiness, remove a few kernels and attempt to dent them with your fingernail; fully mature kernels should be hard and resistant. Store dried corn in a cool, dry place.
