Coriandrum sativum – Slow Bolt

  • Growing Temp 50°F – 75°F
  • Days to Maturity 50-55 days

Ease of Cultivation and Culinary Use: Slow Bolt cilantro is a popular herb known for its fragrant leaves and ability to resist bolting in warmer weather. It is moderately easy to grow, preferring cooler temperatures and consistent moisture. Both the leaves (cilantro) and seeds (coriander) are used in cooking, making it a versatile herb for salsas, curries, and garnishes.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant Slow Bolt cilantro seeds outdoors in early spring or fall when temperatures are cooler. Sow the seeds ¼ inch deep and about 6 inches apart in rows that are 12 inches apart. Germination typically occurs within 7–10 days. Keep the soil consistently moist but well-drained to support healthy growth and reduce the risk of bolting.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To start early, sow cilantro seeds indoors 2–4 weeks before the last expected frost. Use seedling trays filled with quality potting mix, placing 1–2 seeds per cell. Maintain a temperature of 60–70°F to encourage germination. Once seedlings have their first true leaves and the danger of frost has passed, transplant them into the garden, spacing them about 6 inches apart in rows 12 inches apart. Water them well after transplanting, and consider adding mulch to help retain moisture.

Harvesting: To identify when Slow Bolt cilantro is ready for harvest, look for lush green leaves that are around 3–6 inches long, typically ready within 50-55 days. Begin harvesting by snipping leaves from the outer portions of the plant, leaving the central growth to continue developing. Regular harvesting encourages prolonged leaf production. If left to flower, the seeds can be harvested as coriander when they turn brown.
