Ease of Cultivation and Uses: Roman chamomile is a perennial herb known for its aromatic flowers and low-growing habit. It is relatively easy to cultivate, preferring well-drained soil and full sun. Roman chamomile is prized for its sweet, apple-like fragrance and is commonly used in herbal teas, as well as for its calming and digestive benefits.
Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant Roman chamomile seeds outdoors in early spring after the last expected frost when soil temperatures are around 60°F. Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil, as they need light for germination, and lightly press them down. Space the seeds about 12 inches apart in rows that are 18–24 inches apart. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days. Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid overwatering to prevent damping off.
Early Sowing for Seedlings: To start early, sow Roman chamomile seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost. Use seedling trays filled with quality potting mix, scattering the seeds on the surface and lightly pressing them down. Maintain a temperature of 70°F to encourage germination. Once the seedlings have developed their first true leaves and the danger of frost has passed, transplant them into the garden. Space the transplants about 12 inches apart in rows that are 18–24 inches apart. Water them well after planting and consider adding mulch to help retain moisture.
Harvesting: To determine when Roman chamomile is ready for harvest, look for fully opened flowers, which typically occur within 60-90 days after sowing. The best time to harvest is on a sunny morning when the flowers are dry. Cut the flowers just above the leaves to encourage new growth. Dry the harvested flowers in a cool, dark place and store them in an airtight container to maintain their flavor and potency for use in teas and other herbal remedies.
