Ease of Cultivation and Uses: Catnip is a perennial herb known for its aromatic leaves and its ability to elicit a euphoric response in cats. This herb is easy to grow, thriving in a variety of soil types and conditions, although it prefers well-drained soil and full sun. Catnip is not only enjoyed by felines but can also be used in herbal teas and as a mild sedative for humans.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant catnip seeds outdoors in early spring after the last expected frost when the soil temperature is consistently above 60°F. Sow the seeds about ¼ inch deep and spaced 18 inches apart in rows that are 24–30 inches apart. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days. Keep the soil consistently moist until the seedlings are established, and thin them to allow for adequate airflow and growth.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To start early, sow catnip seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost. Use seedling trays filled with quality potting mix, placing 2-3 seeds per cell. Maintain a temperature of 70–75°F to encourage germination. Once the seedlings have developed their first true leaves and the danger of frost has passed, transplant them into the garden. Space the transplants about 18 inches apart in rows that are 24–30 inches apart. Water them well after planting and consider adding mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Harvesting: To determine when catnip is ready for harvest, look for lush green leaves and flowering stems, typically within 70-90 days after sowing. The best time to harvest is just before the plant flowers, as this is when the leaves have the highest concentration of essential oils. Cut the stems back to about 6 inches, and dry the leaves in a cool, dark place. Store the dried leaves in an airtight container to preserve their potency for use in teas or as a catnip toy filler.
