Phaseolus vulgaris ‘Green Sprouting Calabrese’

  • Growing Temp             60°F – 75°F
  • Days to Maturity         60-85 days

Producing large, central heads followed by many side shoots: It is moderately easy to grow, thriving in cooler weather and requiring well-drained, fertile soil. This broccoli is commonly eaten steamed, roasted, stir-fried, or raw, making it a versatile vegetable in the kitchen. It’s packed with vitamins and nutrients, particularly vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant seeds outdoors 2–4 weeks before the last frost in spring or in late summer for a fall crop. Sow seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep and 12–18 inches apart in rows that are spaced 24 inches apart. The seeds will typically germinate within 7–10 days if the soil temperature is around 60–70°F. Green Sprouting Calabrese broccoli requires consistent moisture, especially as it matures, so regular watering is essential. Once the central head has formed, it can be harvested, and the plant will continue to produce smaller side shoots for several weeks.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: For early sowing, start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Sow them in seed trays or small pots with a light, well-drained potting mix. Keep the temperature between 65–70°F to ensure proper germination. Once the seedlings have developed two sets of true leaves and the threat of frost has passed, harden them off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for a few days. Then, transplant them into the garden, spacing the plants 12–18 inches apart. Water them well after transplanting and mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Harvesting:

To know when Green Sprouting Calabrese broccoli is ready to harvest, look for a central head that is tight, firm, and about 4–8 inches across. The buds should still be closed and deep green in color. Harvest before the yellow flowers start to bloom, as this indicates the broccoli is overripe. After cutting the central head, the plant will continue to produce side shoots, which can be harvested over several weeks for a prolonged yield.
