Broccoli – ‘Di Cicco’

  • Growing Temp 60°F – 70°F
  • Days to Maturity 50-70 days

Ease of Cultivation and nutritious flavor: ‘Di Cicco’ broccoli is a popular Italian variety known for its tender, flavorful florets and abundant side shoots. This variety is relatively easy to grow, making it an excellent choice for home gardeners. ‘Di Cicco’ can be enjoyed fresh in salads, steamed, or used in a variety of cooked dishes, providing both nutrition and versatility to meals.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant ‘Di Cicco’ broccoli seeds outdoors in early spring, about 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost. Sow seeds ½ inch deep and 2-4 inches apart in rows spaced 24 inches apart. The seeds will typically germinate within 7-14 days. Broccoli prefers well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter, so ensure consistent moisture through regular watering. Thin seedlings to about 12-18 inches apart once they are a few inches tall to allow for adequate growth. Expect to harvest in about 50-70 days.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: To start early, sow ‘Di Cicco’ seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost. Plant seeds ½ inch deep in seed trays filled with quality potting mix, maintaining a temperature of 70°F – 75°F for optimal germination. Once seedlings develop a few true leaves and the risk of frost has passed, transplant them outdoors, spacing them 12-18 inches apart in rows. Water well after transplanting to establish strong roots.

Harvesting: ‘Di Cicco’ broccoli is ready to harvest when the central head is tight and firm, typically around 50-70 days after sowing. Cut the main head with a sharp knife, taking care not to damage the surrounding leaves. This variety will also produce numerous side shoots after the main head is harvested, allowing for multiple harvests over several weeks. Harvest side shoots when they are still young and tender for the best flavor.
