Phaseolus vulgaris ‘Be Sweet’

  • Growing Temp             70°F – 85°F
  • Days to Maturity         75-90 days

Prized for its sweet, nutty flavor and nutritional value: The Be Sweet Edamame is relatively easy to grow, particularly in warm climates where the temperature remains consistently above 70°F. Edamame is often enjoyed as a snack, steamed and lightly salted, or added to salads, stir-fries, and other dishes for a protein-rich boost.

Direct Sowing: For direct sowing, plant the seeds outdoors once the soil has warmed to at least 70°F, typically after the last frost. Sow the seeds about 1 inch deep and 2–3 inches apart, with rows spaced 18–24 inches apart. Edamame seeds usually germinate within 7–10 days under optimal conditions. Keep the soil consistently moist but well-drained, as edamame does not tolerate waterlogged conditions. As the plants grow, they may require minimal support, though most edamame varieties, including Be Sweet, are quite sturdy. Harvesting begins when the pods are plump and the beans inside feel firm, usually when they are about 2–3 inches long.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: For an early start, you can sow seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before the last expected frost. Use seedling trays with a well-draining potting mix and place one seed per cell. Maintain a temperature of 70–75°F for optimal germination. Once the seedlings have developed a few sets of leaves and the risk of frost has passed, transplant them into the garden. Space the seedlings 2–3 inches apart in rows that are 18–24 inches apart. Water well after planting and consider using mulch to retain soil moisture and reduce weed competition.

Harvesting: To identify when Be Sweet Edamame is ready to harvest, look for pods that are bright green, plump, and slightly fuzzy. The beans inside should fill the pod but not bulge out too much. Typically, this occurs when the pods are 2–3 inches long. Harvest the pods by cutting or snapping them off the plant. For the best flavor, harvest in the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler. Edamame should be eaten fresh or quickly blanched and frozen to preserve their sweetness and texture.
