Bean Bush – ‘Contender’

  • Growing Temp 60°F – 85°F
  • Days to Maturity 50-55 days

Ease of Cultivation and versatility: The ‘Contender’ bean is a fast-growing, high-yield bush variety that is well known for its ability to produce tender, stringless pods even in cooler weather. It is highly adaptable and resistant to common diseases, making it a great choice for home gardeners. The beans are excellent for fresh eating, canning, or freezing, and have a crisp, delicious flavor.

Direct Sowing: To direct sow ‘Contender’ beans, plant seeds outdoors when the soil temperature has reached at least 60°F. Sow seeds about 1 inch deep and 3 inches apart in rows that are 18–24 inches apart. The seeds typically germinate within 7–10 days. Water consistently, especially during dry spells, to ensure steady growth. Bush beans generally do not require support, making them easy to maintain. The pods are usually ready for harvest in 50-55 days.

Early Sowing for Seedlings: For an early start, ‘Contender’ beans can be started indoors 2–4 weeks before the last expected frost. Use seed trays filled with a high-quality potting mix and place one seed per cell, about 1 inch deep. Keep the temperature between 70°F – 75°F for optimal germination. After the danger of frost has passed, transplant the seedlings into the garden, spacing them 3 inches apart in rows. Be sure to water well and mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Harvesting: The ‘Contender’ beans are ready to harvest when the pods are firm, tender, and reach 4-6 inches in length. The beans should be deep green and smooth to the touch. Harvest regularly to encourage continued production, as leaving pods on the plant too long can cause them to become tough. For the best flavor, pick the beans when they are young and crisp.
